Vervet Monkey Day
Today we woke up at 6:30 and did research with the Vervet monkey people here. They follow a couple groups of Vervet monkeys to study how they interact with one another, what they eat, different calls they make to one another, mating habits, and social hierarchy. They somehow can tell each and every monkey apart from one another, and have particular names for each one! It was very fascinating to see how habituated these monkeys were with us, but sometimes they would give you a head bob, which meant something like get the hell away from me. We followed them through the forest for 5 or so hours, and saw all sorts of funny interactions between them. After that, we came back and had a little lunch, and then took a walk through the brush to find some animals. We didn't see much, but did see a leopard track, which gives me hope that I may find one here. Tonight we are going on a night drive to find an ardwolf, which looks like a small hyena, but it only eats termites. Evidently it's a pretty interesting looking creature, so I hope we find one!
